What is DNS propagation?

The time it takes for a changed DNS record to be seen by resolvers around the internet.

How it works in practice

Resolvers cache an answer until its TTL expires, so a changed record is visible in some places before others. New records on names nobody has queried are usually visible within minutes; changed records can take as long as the old TTL. Lowering the TTL before a planned change shortens the wait.

The common mistake

Concluding that a record is wrong because one resolver still returns the old value.
