552 5.2.2 error: Recipient's mailbox is full

The recipient's mailbox is over its storage quota and can't take new mail. Some servers treat it as temporary, others reject it outright.

How to fix 552 5.2.2

  1. It's the recipient's problem - retry later, or reach them another way.
  2. Don't keep resending: repeated attempts add to your bounce count for nothing.

Why this happens

The recipient's mailbox itself can't take the message right now - it is full, disabled or temporarily unavailable. It has nothing to do with your content or reputation.

How to keep it from coming back

You can't prevent a recipient's full mailbox, but you can avoid sending repeatedly to addresses that keep returning it, and remove them if the error persists across several attempts.

Should I retry a 552 5.2.2 error?

Normally you don't have to do anything: a temporary error means the receiving server asked for a delay, and your mail server retries on its own for hours or days. Don't resend by hand on top of the queue. If the same deferral keeps coming back from one provider, treat it as a signal to slow down, not as bad luck.

Got the full bounce message?

The text after the code names the exact reason, and the same code can mean different things at different receivers. Paste the whole message into the decoder - it runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
